Walk up to a concentrate menu and you are met with a wall of words: live rosin, cured resin, badder, budder, shatter, crumble, sugar, sauce, diamonds, THCA. Prices swing from twenty dollars to eighty for what looks like the same amount of the same substance.
Almost none of it is explained anywhere, and asking can feel like admitting you don't belong. So here is the whole vocabulary in plain terms, and why the prices differ.
Start here: concentrate is just cannabis with the plant taken away
Flower is roughly 20–30% cannabinoids by weight. The rest is plant matter — cellulose, chlorophyll, fibre. Concentrate is what you get when you separate the resin from all of that. Everything else on this page is a variation on how you separate it and what you do with it afterwards.
The first split: solventless or solvent-based
This is the most meaningful distinction on any menu, and it is where most of the price difference lives.
Solventless
Nothing but ice, water, heat and pressure. Trichomes are separated mechanically, then pressed. The two you will see:
- Bubble hash — trichomes separated in ice water and dried. The oldest method here, and the input for rosin.
- Rosin — bubble hash or flower pressed between heated plates. Nothing is added and nothing needs removing.
The yield is low, which is the honest reason it costs more.
Solvent-based
A solvent — usually butane, propane or CO₂ — dissolves the resin off the plant, then is purged. In Mississippi the finished product is lab-tested for residual solvents before it can be sold. Names you will see include BHO, live resin and distillate.
The advantage is efficiency and consistency. Higher yield means lower price for comparable potency.
The second split: live or cured
This one is about the plant, not the extraction.
- Live — frozen immediately after harvest. Volatile terpenes that would evaporate during a normal dry-and-cure are preserved, so live products usually taste closest to the growing plant.
- Cured — dried and cured conventionally first. Often a heavier, less bright profile. Cheaper, and not automatically worse.
Stack the two splits and the common menu items decode themselves: live rosin is solventless from fresh-frozen; live resin is solvent-extracted from fresh-frozen; cured resin is solvent-extracted from dried material.
Textures: all the same stuff, handled differently
Here is the part that surprises people. Badder, shatter, sauce and diamonds can all come from the same extract. Texture is a function of temperature, agitation and time after extraction — not a different product.

So “which texture is best” is mostly a handling preference. Badder is the easiest to work with; shatter keeps longest; sauce carries the most aroma; diamonds test highest on paper.
Distillate is a different animal
Distillate is refined much further — repeatedly separated until what remains is close to pure cannabinoid. Very high THC, and almost no terpenes, which is why flavour is often added back afterwards. It is the cheapest way to reach a high number on a label, and it is what fills most inexpensive vape cartridges. Nothing wrong with it; just know it is a different thing from a terpene-rich live product.
Reading the number on the jar
Concentrates test high — commonly 60–85% THC against flower's 20–30%. Two things worth knowing:
- A high number does not make it good. Distillate can out-test live rosin comfortably while tasting of far less. Terpene content and how it was made drive the experience.
- Potency is what your allotment is charged on. Unlike flower, which is charged flat by weight, concentrates are counted on actual THC mass. A 0.5g jar at 59% is 295mg — 0.295 MMECU. The maths is on our concentrates page and the allotment checker does it for a specific basket.
Keeping it
Cool, dark, sealed, and not in a warm car. Concentrates degrade with heat and light faster than flower, and warm concentrate becomes a texture nobody enjoys handling. Shatter is the most stable over time; sauce and badder are happiest used sooner.
If you are buying your first one
Start far smaller than feels sensible — a portion the size of a grain of rice is a reasonable first go, and many patients use less. Effects arrive within a minute or two, so you will know quickly where you stand. If you are moving over from flower, this is the biggest step up in potency on the menu.

Common questions
What is the difference between live rosin and live resin?
Rosin is solventless — made with heat and pressure only. Resin is extracted using a solvent such as butane or CO2, which is purged afterwards and lab-tested for residue. Both start from fresh-frozen plant material, which is what 'live' means. Rosin costs more because the process yields less.
What does 'live' mean on a concentrate label?
The plant was frozen immediately after harvest rather than dried and cured first. Freezing preserves volatile terpenes that would otherwise evaporate during drying, so live products generally taste closer to how the growing plant smelled.
Why are some concentrates solid and others runny?
Texture comes from how the extract is handled after extraction — temperature, agitation and time. Whipping it produces badder or budder. Leaving it undisturbed produces shatter. Letting it separate produces sauce with diamonds. The same starting extract can become any of them.
What are cannabis diamonds?
Crystalline THCA that has separated out of the extract and formed solid structures, usually sitting in a pool of terpene-rich sauce. They look dramatic and test very high on paper, because THCA converts to THC when heated.
Is solventless better than solvent-based?
Not automatically. Solventless commands a premium on flavour and purity preference, but solvent-based extracts are purged and tested for residual solvents before they can be sold in Mississippi. Plenty of excellent concentrate is solvent-extracted.
